The historic Great Star Theater is currently undergoing rennovations and cleaning to be ready to re-open after the COVID lockdown is over. This is a community-driven effort, so please join us to help. We will be organizing community clean-up days in the new year where a safe number of mask-wearing volunteers can join us to help, so contact us for more details. Want to contribute to the cause? We just launched a fundraiser for our rennovations and cleanup efforts. We would also love to help take any old theater, sound, or lighting equipment off your hands as a tax-deductable donation.
This is an exciting new beginning in these challenging times. We hope to reopen in the summer of 2021 and celebrate the end of the pandemic in style.
Built in 1925, the 500-seat Great Star Theater is the only remaining theater in San Francisco's Chinatown, and one of the only traditional raked stage theaters in California.
Throughout the years it has hosted countless Chinese operas, Chinese movies, local artists, and amazing musical, circus, and variety performers from the world over. San Francisco remains the biggest hub for Chinese Opera outside of China, especially Cantonese Opera.
We are working to preserve that monumental history while also bringing fresh life to this beloved venue. Over the coming months we will be bringing the facilities, bathrooms, lighting, and sound up to code and to the high standards that will best highlight local and world-class artists alike. It's a monumental effort that takes a community!
